SweidaCity in southern Syria, capital of Swaida Governorate and main city of the Hawran and Jabal al-Arab region. It was found by the Nabataeans in the 1st century BC and was occupied by the Romans in the 1st century. It became an important centre Christianity in the 5th century. The remains of a Roman temple and a Byzantine church are still standing today. The Governorate of Swaida includes 2 provinces: Salkhad and Shahba.
