Dara'a
City in southwestern Syria, the main city of Hawran region and capital of the Dar'a Governorate. The city contains Greek and Roman ruins and was formerly famous for its wine. The famous battle of Yarmouk, in which Arab armies defeated the Byzantines in 636, was fought near the city. The Hejaz Railway that connects Damascus and Mecca used to run through Dar'a before it stopped in 1916. Population (1981 estimate) 49,534.
